Privacy policy
What we collect, why, and how to get rid of it. Plain words first; anything still owed is marked as owed.
Who we are
1 Billion Beers is operated by Tally Sport Ltd (company number 17211362), which is the data controller for the personal data described here. Reach us at hello@1billionbeers.com.
What we collect
- Your email address — to sign you in by magic link, and to tell you the occasional thing you need to know: a milestone, or a change to the terms. Never marketing, and you can stop them. There are no passwords.
- The name and city you choose — shown on every beer you post.
- The photos and videos you post — visible to everyone signed in to the app.
- Your likes and your reports — which beers you liked, and anything you reported.
- A count of which beers have been shown — a sample used to rank the feed. It counts beers, not people.
That is the list. There is no personal score, no address book and no advertising identifier, and we do not track where you are — see Device permissions for the one time we ask.
Device permissions
- Camera — to photograph or film the beer in front of you. This is the only way to post; there is no photo-library access, and the app never reads your existing photos.
- Microphone — not requested. Video is recorded silent, and the microphone is left out of the build entirely.
- Location — optional, and only when you tap LOCATE on your own profile. We ask your device once for an approximate position, use it to look up the name of the nearest town, and put that name and the country code into the city and country fields. Nothing more.
The camera permission is optional and the app asks before using it. You can withdraw it at any time in your device settings; you will not be able to post without it.
The location permission is never requested on launch and never in the background. It is requested by that one button and nothing else, we ask for approximate accuracy rather than a precise fix, and your position is not written down: it goes to our server, becomes a town name, and is gone. Decline it, or withdraw it later in your device settings, and the city field works the way it always has — you type it.
Your photos
Photos and videos you post are public to everyone signed in to the app, and carry the city stamp you had set when you posted them. Changing your profile later does not rewrite the beers you have already posted. Delete a beer and it comes down for everyone, and the counter goes with it.
No beer is ever rendered on the web. A share link opens the app, which reads the beer behind a sign-in, so a link posted into a group chat does not put your photo, your name or your city into that chat's preview or into any crawler's cache.
Reported beers are reviewed by a person, which means someone at Tally Sport Ltd looks at the photo, the title and the account that posted it in order to rule on the report.
Who else touches it
We use a small number of processors to run the service, and nothing beyond them:
- Resend — sends the magic-link emails.
- Cloudflare R2 — stores the photos and videos.
- GeoNames — turns a position into the name of the nearest town. It receives the coordinates for that one lookup and nothing that identifies you.
- Mailchimp — holds the mailing list. It receives your email address and nothing else.
- Expo — delivers the notifications, if you turned them on. It receives a token that identifies your installation of the app, so that Apple or Google can wake it. That is not your email address and not your name; deleting the app makes it dead, and we delete the row the first time a notification bounces.
- Apple and Google — only if you use their sign-in buttons. They tell us the email address on your Apple or Google account, and Apple tells us your name once. We never see your password, and we tell them nothing about you in return.
- Our own server — runs the application and the database.
The database runs on our own server in the EU. Cloudflare R2 stores the photos and videos on Cloudflare's network. Everything travels over TLS.
What we do not do
No ads, no tracking pixels, no analytics SDKs, and we do not sell or rent your data to anyone. There is no personal score to profile you against.
Your rights
Under the UK GDPR and equivalent laws you have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you
- Correct it — your name and city are editable in the app
- Delete your account and everything attached to it, from the Account screen
- Object to or restrict our processing of it
- Complain to the Information Commissioner's Office, or your local data protection authority
To exercise any of these, email hello@1billionbeers.com.
Deleting your account
Delete your account from the Account screen. Your beers, your likes and your profile go with it, the photos are removed from storage, and the counter comes down by the number of beers you had posted. It is immediate and it cannot be undone.
In the app: open 1 Billion Beers, tap the account button on the feed, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete my account. You will be asked to type DELETE to confirm. There is no queue and no grace period.
If you no longer have the app: email hello@1billionbeers.com from the address you signed in with and ask us to delete your account. You do not need to reinstall anything, and we will confirm when it is done.
What goes: your account and profile — name, city, email address; every beer you posted and every photograph and video with it; every like you gave; and your notification token, if you had notifications on. Likes other people gave your beers go with the beers.
Two things survive and neither is about you: a report somebody else filed, once it has been ruled on, and ordinary server logs, which age out. The waitlist and the mailing list are a separate address on a separate list — say so in the email and we will remove that too.
Age
1 Billion Beers is for people who are 18 or older, or over the legal drinking age where they live, whichever is higher. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone below that. If you believe someone under age has an account, email us and we will remove it.
Changes
We may update this policy. If the change is significant we will tell you in the app or by email.
